Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Dermal Filler?

As we age, our face tends to lose volume and structure which visibly leads us to look older. The reason is that we lose Hyaluronic acid which gives us volume and collagen which gives our face structure. Hyaluronic acid, is found in all living cells. It attracts and binds water which hydrates the skin and gives it volume. Dermal fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid which becomes integrated into our tissues, and draws water to itself to give us volume.

How are fillers administered?

Fillers are injected into facial tissue into previously numbed skin. Dermal fillers can include lidocaine, a numbing agent which anaesthetises the tissue after the filler has been injected. At Marine Drive Laser, we try to ensure as much comfort as possible during the procedure. We also numb the skin with an ointment before injecting the filler with lidocaine. This helps the client feel more relaxed and less anxious during the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the area to be filled, and the clients comfort level, the procedure can last from 15 minutes to 30 minutes. Fillers are well tolerated and clients can return to work right after the procedure, if they choose.

Why use fillers if BOTOX® is available?

BOTOX® is excellent for reducing wrinkles however cannot correct deep grooves or lost volume. For best results, the combination of Botox and Fillers are recommended.

Are fillers permanent?

No, fillers are temporary but can last for at least one year or more depending on the type of filler used.

What are the risks?

Allergic reactions are rare as hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our bodies. Bruising can occur, however to reduce the risk of bruising avoid aspirin for two weeks before injection. For two days before the procedure, you should avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as ibuprofen, vitamin E supplements, Fish Oil, Garlic tablets, Gingko biloba and Ginseng. It is also helpful to avoid exercise immediately following the injections. Taking Arnica Montana and bromelain may also help to minimize bruising.

What are the areas typically injected?

Fillers can be used to add volume to the cheeks, marionette lines (lines beneath the mouth), Nasolabial folds (smile lines), lips, deep grooves from wrinkles, scars, etc.

Will I look unnatural?

At Marine Drive Laser, we have trained, certified practitioners whose philosophies are to help their clients look natural, younger and refreshed.
